PAOK set sights on Sifakis

Just days after Dario Kresic submitted a request to terminate his contract, PAOK have wasted no time sizing up his replacement as the Thessaloniki looks to lure Michalis Sifakis to Toumba…

Forced to sign a ‘keeper following the mutual termination of Dario Kresic’s contract, PAOK are reportedly keen on signing Greek international shot-stopper Michalis Sifakis on a free transfer from Aris.

Kresic, PAOK’s expected starter for the upcoming season, requested a termination of his contract on Friday, which was granted following a meeting with PAOK technical director Giorgos Georgiadis on Saturday.

A starter at UEFA EURO 2012 with Greece in June, Sifakis had reportedly attracted offers from abroad; including Serie A side Torino. The failure for these transfers to materialize has opened the door for PAOK, who appear to be in a race against time following Kresic’s hand-cuffing decision to request a PAOK exit.

Sifakis was previously under contract at crosstown rivals Aris, but after a dispute over a compensation and an official arbitration hearing, the former Olympiacos and OFI ‘keeper was allowed to rescind his contract with Aris.

PAOK face Israeli outfit Bnei Yehuda in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round tie on Thursday, with manager Giorgos Donis expected to hand Panagiotis Glykos his first start in European competition as Kresic’s departure comes shortly after it was revealed that Kostas Chalkias wouldn’t be returning to the club.
